It was a beautiful day in Toronto yesterday and I decided to go for a walk in Humber Bay Park East. I’d heard about the park, but had never been there. It’s delightful, although a bit bleak at the moment; it may be warm, but it’s still only March and there’s precious little greenery.

The park has a monument to the 1985 Air India disaster. I came across it unexpectedly. All 329 names of those who died are inscribed on panels of polished granite. Just reading the names brings on extraordinary sadness and anger. Entire families were wiped out by an act of pure evil.

The murderers have never been properly brought to justice. The Major Commission Report of 2011 detailed the bungling and incompetence of Canadian police and security officials before and after the bombing, but caused hardly a stir. This is unfinished business, and so long as it remains unfinished business we should not rest easy.
